Sorry I’m a bit late with this! I try to send these out on Saturday mornings but sometimes life gets in the way.

An example of life “getting in the way” (or really, an example of me prioritizing friend time over writing): I hosted a barbeque with some non-vegan friends!

I know a lot of vegans worry about friendships with non-vegans. Let alone hosting non-vegans. And I get where you’re coming from!

But I love it.

When hosting non-vegans, look at this as an opportunity to showcase veganism in a positive light. Make something extra special for them. Make them foods they’ve never tried before. Give them an experience!

What I like to do is overwhelm them with choice. I told my friends “no need to bring anything, I’ll supply everything.” We had:

  • 2 types of vegan sausages

  • Beyond Meat burgers (made by adding salt, pepper, and olive oil to Beyond Meat minced “beef” and shaping them into patties)

  • Homemade bread

  • Sweet potato fries

  • Bbq corn

  • Bbq veggies: onion and pepper

By providing a variety of food for your friends, you make it into something fun. It’s novel. They will (start to) associate veganism with fun. They won’t miss the meat because they’re having so much fun trying new foods and socializing with you (I often worry about people not having fun if they can’t eat what they usually would eat).

Yes, it costs money to host and to buy all this food. But I like it. It brings me joy cooking for friends and seeing them try new things.

It doesn’t matter if they become vegan or not eventually. But every meal I share with them is another experience that will positively skew their perception of veganism ever so slightly.

This broth is essentially an extra liquidy peanut sauce.

The extra liquid adds to the utility of the sauce/broth as you can use it to make the following:

  • Fried rice

  • Dipping sauce for sandwiches

  • Gravy

  • Salad dressing

  • Substitute for water when making rice

But of course, you can use the broth for ramen.
